My Bedroom

I walked into my house and set my suitcase down in the living room. I’ve been in Florida for a week and I am exhausted with a capital E. I miss Florida a lot but it was nice to be home away from the scorching hot heat. I walk into the kitchen and grab a glass of water since there really is nothing to eat since we had to clear our fridge of all food before we left. I anxiously walk up my hard wooden stairs up to the level where my room would be on. I’m going to be honest; I forgot how I left my room before departing for the trip so when I walk in it is going to be a bit of a surprise. I approach my room and slowly turn the cold, hard metal handle. I open the door and flip the light switch and I notice the dim lighting I left my room with. My off-white elegant chandelier only has one light bulb working out of the three. I’ll have to change that after. I look around the room and notice all the clothes and random objects scattered around my room. There are books and shoes and makeup and all sorts of things on the floor. I must have forgotten to clean up after packing. Across the room, I see my bed neatly covered in a purple zebra print duvet. As I walk across the charcoal carpeted floor, I use as much caution as I can to not step on something that could hurt me but I still do. I feel like I’m walking across a pit of hot rocks. No matter how hard I try, there is always some hard or pointy object that happens to find its way under my foot. I reach my bed and flop into the soft and fuzzy duvet. I could’ve landed on a pile of clouds and won’t have known the difference. I can still smell the downy scented pillows as I bury my head into the heap of fluffiness. I flip onto my back and sit up observing the condition of the rest of the room. I realize that there is a lot of built up dust from things being untouched for a while. I look to my right where my desk with my makeup and hair supplies lay and seeing one of my two curling irons reminds me of when I was getting ready to go to downtown Disney for dinner at a fancy Italian restaurant with my family. That was my first time having bread dipped in oil and covered with garlic. I remember the crunchy crust of the bread and the soft inside of it. The oil added a rich taste to the bread and the garlic contributed a strong scent that added extra flavour to the natural bland bread. I flash out of my day dream and come back into reality, staring at the lavender coloured walls. I haven’t even been in my room for 10 minutes and I’m already tired of his colour. It’s not bright enough. As I sit on my bed I get this weird feeling, almost like I’m in a foreign place but I’m not sure why. It doesn’t seem right to me. Right then, I remember that is night time and I can’t hear the usual chirping of the birds or the constant swishing of cars. It’s very calm in the Groot household right now which is very usual. It must be because everyone’s so tired. I don’t hear the usual barking of my dogs either but that’s because they were at the kennels for the week. We’ll pick them up tomorrow, but for now I’m focused on getting to bed as fast as I can. I tip toe over to where my white makeup desk sits and grab a soft cotton pad out of the plastic, clear drawers where my cosmetics usually lay. I pick up the eye makeup remover, pour a small amount on the cotton and wipe the soft pad across my eye while looking in the dirty mirror. Looks like I’m going to have to clean that too. After I finish that and brush my hair, I take to little steps over to the tall, white wardrobe I keep beside m desk and open the first drawer. This drawer is relatively new so I can still smell the pine that the wood was made from. I pull out a pair of soft pajama shorts and a loose blue shirt and change into that before hoping into my bed once again. I pull the covers over me and I feel like I’m being wrapped in a burrito. The relaxing environment helps me fall asleep almost instantly as my head hits the pillows.

Literacy Blog #7

For the role of Puck I thought Owen Wilson would play him best. Owen Wilson has been in films such as Zoolander, Night at the Museum and Marley & Me. Puck is a jokester and tends to have a sense of humour. Owen Wilson plays a funny character in a lot of the movies he’s been in so I think this would be a good choice. For physical appearance, I don’t picture Puck as a jacked up muscle man, I think of him as kind of skimpy with a big of muscle. Owen Wilson is a great representation of just that and would definitely get the watcher engaged throughout the entire movie.

I thought Sandra Bullock would play Titania the best. When I picture Titania I imagine a grown up, beautiful but very assertive woman. This is exactly the role she played in The Proposal. She has lots of character and can do any role perfectly with a lot of emotion. She is old enough to look like she could raise a child and get married but not too old that she looks like she’s going to die of old age. She has a perfect mother figure and is beautiful enough to play a beautiful role. She would be perfect for the role of Titania.

Emma Stone would be a great actress to play the role of Helena because she has sass and also can play lots of different characters. In Easy A she was sassy, promiscuous, funny and also had rage in some parts. She would play Helena great because I imagine her as one of those types of girls who once they get the boys after them, she takes advantage of them and uses them. Emma Stone can do this well in her acting. She is also very good at acting like she’s ok when she’s not, but makes it obvious that she’s sad and Helena is like that because no guys like her or want her. When she was fighting with Hermia, she kept her class and sass but also had a lot of rage in her. Emma has sass and knows how to keep her class as well as be fighting and yelling at the same time. Emma has a young face like I imagined Helena but also has beauty but not absolutely stunning.

I chose this picture to represent the book because there are a lot of visuals that represent the book. The background and colours all have a meaning behind it that I am going to point out. First of all, we have Titania lying on the ground sleeping while Puck is above her dropping the magic juice on her eyes and this represents the confusion and conflict between the main characters. This is because with this love triangle going on between Demetrius, Lysander, Hermia and Helena there is jealousy which can cause a problem and eventually does. Now, with Oberon and Titania having their fight this also causes conflict because all the workers of the land aren’t working and they’re slacking off because they don’t have bosses to keep them in line. When Oberon notices Helena chasing Demetrius he wants to fix the problem and make him fall in love with her with the magic flower juice. He sends off Puck to retrieve the flower and to put some of the liquid in the boy’s eyes wearing “Athenian garments”.  When Puck goes to do so he put the juice in the wrong boy’s eyes and when Lysander wakes up and falls in love with her, it causes confusion in Helena and Hermia because Helena thinks he is mocking her and making fun of her because he was calling her ugly and disgusting the night before. Hermia is confused because when she wakes up she sees no Lysander sleeping where he was before. When she does find Lysander in love with Helena, she has no idea what’s going on. This is why sleeping Titania and Puck represent the book. Going on, the background is very dark, just like the emotions going on between the four. Obviously, Helena was upset before when no one wanted her and now Hermia is feeling betrayed by Helena because she’s taking Demetrius’ and Lysander’s side even though she is supposed to be Hermia's best friend. Meanwhile, Lysander and Demetrius are going to try to kill each other to see who gets Helena and as everyone knows, death isn’t a happy thing. The majority of the book is filled with sadness and loneliness which is why I think this cover represents this book the best.

Connection between my novel and MSND.

The connection I am making between my book King of the Screwups and A Midsummer Night’s Dream is Lysander and Liam are both very determined to get what they want. Liam is determined to become friends with the weirdest girl in his school and become unpopular so he can impress his dad and make him proud. Lysander disobeys his parents to meet Hermia so he can marry the love of his life. Liam’s dad got tired of his foolishness and need for popularity so he sent him away to temporarily live with his uncle. Liam want to make his dad proud so he tries to become unpopular at his new school but no matter what he does he just gains more popularity and the girl he wants to become friends with hates him even more each time. First, Liam tries to get good grades and he has great participation in class with no problems, except for the fact that everything he says is wrong. Darleen, the “nerdy” girl Liam wants to befriend, thinks he’s mocking her and she ignores him. Next Liam tries to dress opposite of his usual high quality fashion but no one seems to care or notice and some actually compliment his new sense of style. Lastly, he tries to join an academic club but he’s not smart enough to join anything that will make him less popular. This is until he finds out about the AP club that do the morning announcements. Liam thinks he finally found something that will make him seem like a loser but when he does the announcements as bad as he could everyone loves him and they think he was hilarious. This is, except for Darleen. She is mad at him because she takes the morning announcements very seriously. He is getting pretty frustrated by this time but he never gives up. Liam shows so much determination to impress his dad just like Lysander is so determined to marry Hermia. Lysander knows that if he fails to succeed he could end up with serious consequences for himself and Hermia but his doesn't keep him from going for what he really wants. Lysander wants Hermia to be his forever but her parents want her to marry Demetrius. Hermia doesn't care for Demetrius so she and Lysander makes plans to wed outside of Athens because there the law won’t matter and they won’t be prosecuted.

Text to Self Connection

In the book I'm reading, King of the Screwups, the main character, Liam, is forced to go live with his uncle that he’s only met one time when he was too young to remember. Liam is introduced to new people and new surroundings that he needs to adjust to. He feels he doesn’t fit in as well because his uncle lives in a dirty, old trailer park and wears slopping old clothes while Liam used to live with his parents in a big house in the city and owns only expensive, designer clothing. Liam finds the situation awkward because he can’t relate to anyone he meets and is shy around them. This is like the time when I was younger when I had to go over to my aunt’s house for a few hours because my mom wasn’t able to watch after me. The entire time I was awkward and shy because I hadn’t talked to my aunt much and we knew really nothing about each other so there was nothing much to talk about or do. We didn’t have many similar likes either.  She drinks tea and I drink coke, she listens to classical music while I listen to pop music so no matter what we did, it was always awkward or uncomfortable for both of us. It was even worse when she had some colleagues from work over and I was forced to sit in the room with them questioning me and talking about foreign subjects. Frankly, for most of the time I was just counting the time until my mom to come and pick me up. But all in all, it was kind of nice to spend time my aunt because we did learn new things about each other which I’m sure Liam will do if he gives his uncle a chance. 

All About Me

I'm Meghan and I'm in Mr. Toms Grade 9 English class. I like to be called Groot though, as a nickname. I am a gymnast and I practice 3 times a week for 3 hours and compete 1-2 times a month. I also coach girls ages 4-10. I have two sisters, Courtney and Olivia and one brother, Christian. I love eating, especially ice cream. I usually spend my days on Tumblr and Twitter and creeping celebrities that don't know I exist. I love reading and writing but I don't have a favorite book. One of the best movies ever is Perks of Being A Wallflower and I also love the movie 21 Jump Street.


The book I am reading is called ‘The King of Screwups’ by K.L. Going. It’s about a teenage boy named Liam Geller who his whole life has been screwing up and messing up important events in his life, accidentally of course. When he was younger he was on national television for his supermodel mom’s interview but of course he couldn’t leave without somehow embarrassing his parents, like admitting to their paternity test. We can’t forget about the other time when his dad was receiving a very important award for his job and he was at his celebration banquet listening to his CEO dad make a speech in front of a gym full of people and his phone went off. But the last time Liam messes up is the last time his dad will put up with it. Liam is caught fooling around with a girl in his dad’s office and knocks down a pile of important documents and that is the last straw. In the morning after that incident, his parents call Liam’s redneck uncle who lives in a muddy old trailer park and asks if Liam can stay there so they can get a break from him. This is a big change for Liam because he has never talked to this uncle, he is used to wearing designer clothing and going out partying with his friends every weekend but in this trailer park, he is miles away from his friends and his uncle doesn’t even own and iron or a proper room for Liam.

Liam is a 17 year old guy. The book doesn’t give much of a description of Liam but I imagine him as a 5’7-5’8 person with short brown hair that is quiffed off his face. He has bold blue eyes and noticeable check bones with tanned skin and a built body. He is popular with his friends and with the girls and is known as a player. He is one of those kids who don’t really try in school and break the rules like a rebel. He cares more about his social life than school. Liam doesn’t really care about much and is a go-with-the-flow kind of guy. He is also quite vain as he is constantly checking his looks and hair in mirrors and he spends lots of time getting ready in the morning since he must look perfect and presentable every day. This isn’t that much of a shock because his mom is a retired supermodel and knows all about fashion and obviously has the money to buy him all his high end clothing. He thinks of himself as better than everyone else and that everyone else is below him. He figures he is too good for everyone because he is popular and his family owns a lot of money. I couldn’t think of a famous movie actor that could play Liam the way I picture him but I found a picture of a guy I think looks the most like how I picture him.

 

 

 

The book doesn't give a specific location but by the way it is describing the city I'm assuming it’s in California or Florida or a busy, high fashion city in America like those stated. It is talked about as a warm, busy city with lots of shopping malls and expensive, high fashion clothing. The trailer park is a very muddy, old dirty place. The people there seem pretty casual and some seem like big rednecks. The setting is in modern times and all clothing, diction, and technology used in the book is the latest and used in current times. The season that the setting takes place is summer to early fall because Liam is just being enrolled into his last year of school.  This setting reminds me of my trip to Florida during spring break in 2012 because of the heat and the busy streets and high fashion. In Florida there were a lot of palm trees and green grass and busy streets and tall buildings and that is how I imagined the setting in this book. There were a lot of glamorous people and it seemed really chill and that thought popped into my head when the book mentioned how Liam’s mother was a supermodel. All the shopping malls we went to and expensive places reminded me of when Liam was saying how he always had to choose the right outfit because his clothes were so expensive.
