In the book I'm reading, King of the Screwups, the main
character, Liam, is forced to go live with his uncle that he’s only met one time
when he was too young to remember. Liam is introduced to new people and new
surroundings that he needs to adjust to. He feels he doesn’t fit in as well
because his uncle lives in a dirty, old trailer park and wears slopping old
clothes while Liam used to live with his parents in a big house in the city and
owns only expensive, designer clothing. Liam finds the situation awkward
because he can’t relate to anyone he meets and is shy around them. This is like
the time when I was younger when I had to go over to my aunt’s house for a few
hours because my mom wasn’t able to watch after me. The entire time I was
awkward and shy because I hadn’t talked to my aunt much and we knew really
nothing about each other so there was nothing much to talk about or do. We didn’t
have many similar likes either. She
drinks tea and I drink coke, she listens to classical music while I listen to
pop music so no matter what we did, it was always awkward or uncomfortable for
both of us. It was even worse when she had some colleagues from work over and I
was forced to sit in the room with them questioning me and talking about foreign
subjects. Frankly, for most of the time I was just counting the time until my
mom to come and pick me up. But all in all, it was kind of nice to spend time
my aunt because we did learn new things about each other which I’m sure Liam
will do if he gives his uncle a chance.
